CHAPTER 14

Della locked the front door of the store and led Moose to the back of the store. She hated that he had to walk if his paw was bothering him, but there was absolutely no way she could carry him all that way. If she didn’t throw her back out, she’d probably wipe out thousands of dollars in merchandise.

When they got to the back of the store, they went out the back door and then she helped Moose get in her truck . “It’s going to be just fine, Moose,” she told him as she got in the driver's seat.

Della didn’t know much about dogs, or why they might be limping the way he was. She knew he hadn’t been when they’d gotten to the store. But now that she thought about it, she wasn’t so sure. She combed through her memories, trying to determine when he might have hurt himself as she drove across town to the veterinary clinic.

“I hope you’re okay,” she said as she worriedly looked over at Moose. How long had he been limping like that? Why hadn’t she been aware of it? She felt like the worst pet owner in the world. “I’m sorry I didn’t notice sooner.” He looked over at her with his big brown eyes before flopping his head down on his paw.

As she drove, she wondered if she should try to contact the other person whose name was on one of the invoices. It didn’t seem as though Jim had a lot of clients at the time, considering how quickly he’d been able to get to her fence project. Then she wondered if he’d put someone else off because they were friends. She shook her head. Even so, Della knew he wouldn’t stop in the middle of another project just to do hers.

If what Mark said was true, then maybe the other person was the one. She remembered that the name on the invoice had been Maggie Quinn. She hadn’t heard the name before, but that didn’t mean anything. Clover might have been a small town, but it was still big enough that she didn’t know everyone.

She realized maybe that was why she hadn’t noticed Moose limping. Had she been too fixated on the case to notice he was in pain? As they pulled into the gravel parking lot in front of a big red metal building, Moose looked up with interest.

“Okay, big guy. Let’s see if we can figure out what’s wrong with that foot of yours.” Della unbuckled her seat belt and grabbed her purse before getting out and walking around the truck to help Moose get out of the truck. This time she could tell that he was favoring that front paw quite a bit. What did you do to yourself? she thought as they headed for the door.

Inside the floors were polished concrete and there was a low counter with a receptionist behind it. Shelves with different types of dog food lined the wall by the door, along with a display of some sort of flea and tick medicine.
